Shaped in part by Lockyer Creek, which flows through the district and joins the Brisbane River, Lowood sits within easy distance to both Brisbane and Ipswich.
Those familiar with Lowood love to ride or walk the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, which runs for 8K between Lowood and Fernvale, and 12K between Lowood and Coominya.
The town of Lowood was built around the Brisbane Valley branch railway station, and you’ll still find echoes of the station and those who lived and worked there today.
A short drive will take you to either Lake Wivenhoe, known for its non-motorised watersports and fishing, or to Lake Atkinson, where you can enjoy your favourite power craft while skiing, tubing or free-styling on freshwater.
It’s easy to access Lake Atkinson and Atkinson Dam from Lowood.
Lake Atkinson is popular for all kinds of motorised watersport, including power boating, water skiing and jet skiing. If you’re interested in staying overnight, near-by Atkinson Dam Holiday Park offers caravan sites, tent sites and on-site cabins. There’s even a coffee shop on-site, Café Vera, to tempt you with caffeine, cakes and ice cream.
Just north of Atkinson Dam and northwest of Lowood, Coominya is known for its amazing fresh produce and its major employer, an abattoir.
A little-known fact about Coominya is the rise of olive growers in the area, including OlivFresh Organic Olives on McLean Road.
Bellevue Homestead and Vineyard is a heritage listed building, part of the original Wivenhoe Run established in the 1840s and with a range of buildings dating from the early settler period to c 1910. It was restored by the National Trust of Queensland but is now privately owned. It can be visited by appointment for tours, bed & breakfast, morning and afternoon teas, or booked as a venue.
